Job Summary
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist plans, implements, and supervises therapeutic recreation interventions and programs to support patient rehabilitation and recovery. This role includes direct patient engagement, documentation of clinical processes, supervision of interns and staff, and participation in departmental initiatives to ensure quality care and compliance with safety standards.

Who Are We:
Western State Hospital (WSH) is a state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital that has operated since 1828 under the Department of Behavioral Health and Development Services. WSH is a 302-bed Joint Commission-accredited facility located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, within 30 minutes of major university towns. It is affiliated with the University of Virginia’s Department of Psychiatric Medicine. It serves as a training ground for professionals from other colleges and universities in nursing, social work, psychology, and occupational therapy.
Western State Hospital is well regarded locally and across the state, has provided consultation or working tours to seven other states regarding our Psychosocial Rehab “mall” programs, effectively recruits and retains professional staff, and works actively within the hospital and with our community partners to produce good clinical and quality of life outcomes for individuals.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and provide therapeutic recreation interventions tailored to patient needs
- Supervise subordinate staff delivering recreation services and programs
- Communicate clear expectations aligned with departmental goals
- Provide constructive feedback and ensure staff competency
- Address performance issues promptly and maintain proper documentation
- Review and communicate safety issues to maintain a healthy workplace
- Deliver 18–20 hours of active treatment weekly in PSR programs
- Ensure programs are age-appropriate and based on assessment data
- Function as Rehab co-representative on assigned unit
- Interact with patients according to therapeutic guidelines
- Provide client contact hours on and off the unit as indicated
- May supervise assigned programs
- Complete assessments, safety plans, goals, interventions, and client response documentation in PSR database
- Submit initial assessments within seven days of admission
- Document daily progress in the HOPS system
- Conduct quarterly patient satisfaction surveys
- Provide schedules, assignments, and clinical supervision to therapeutic recreation interns
- Complete mid-term and final evaluations within one week of due date
- Attend 6 hours of in-service training and 75% of department meetings
- Supervise community recreation programs and assist as needed
- Schedule and provide employee orientation on the fitness room/equipment per hospital poli
Minimum Qualifications
– Graduation from college with a degree or emphasis in therapeutic recreation
– Certification as a CTRS or CTRS eligible
